Nicola grew up in Ludlow, moved around a bit, and now lives in Herefordshire. After studying Anthropology at Durham University, she tried various occupations including archaeology, local history research, and teaching English in Cairo, before realising that Anthropology with its focus on sex, death and religion was the perfect grounding for a writer.
As well as working with BOLDtext, Nicola’s work has been staged at venues including the Southwark Playhouse (Little Pieces of Gold); the Arts Theatre, London (Paperback Pictures); the Stephen Joseph Theatre (60th anniversary celebrations); the Pleasance Dome at the Edinburgh Fringe (Pentabus); the Shop Front Theatre (Theatre Exchange); the Courtyard Centre for the Arts (New Theatre Works); and the theatre tent at Nozstock. She has also been mentored by Graeae Theatre. She’s currently a member of art/write, an organisation where artists and writers collaborate, and has performed several prose pieces at art galleries in the West Midlands. Nicola also regularly writes for children and young adults.
Nic’s radio plays have been produced on BBC Radio 3, Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra. Her Radio 4 drama Scorched was ‘Radio Choice’ and ‘Pick of the Week’ in The Daily Mail, receiving a 4* review, with the paper describing her writing as being ‘as taut as the skin of a drum.’ Angels in Disguise, her episode of the horror and suspense series ‘The Man in Black’ with Mark Gatiss is often repeated on Radio 4 Extra. Her performance poem Couple also won a BBC Radio 3 poetry competition judged by Jackie Kay.
As a Red Planet Prize screenwriting finalist, she received on-going mentoring and development with Tony Jordan’s Red Planet Pictures and Kudos; and her television script Patient Choice was a BBC Writersroom ‘Sharps’ competition winner (judged by Jack Thorne). Her original TV drama Strawberry Fields about migrant fruit pickers was showcased at BBC TV.
Nicola’s work with BOLDtext includes Dark Matters (Selfies); Nothing To Hide (The Russell Brand Effect); The Trip (Sunstroke); Cold Cuts (Doubled Up); No Man’s Land (Eurotrashed); Killing Time (Leap); A Monster in The Room (Behind Bars); Inspired (Fake Times); 5’ 4” (Behind Bars: Ghosts of the Lock-up); and Enough is Enough (No Planet B).
