Open Door at The REP

Eurotrashed 2016 - Jenny Stokes and Jade Samuels in Stephen Jackson's play

In 2013, BOLDtext Playwrights initiated discussions with Birmingham REP about presenting New Writing nights, and the OPEN DOOR initiative emerged. We pioneered it by presenting eight individual pieces of work-in-progress to a growing regional audience hungry for new work that reflected their lives. Click ‘continue reading’ or scroll down for older posts about the shows.

Since those beginnings, BOLDtext Playwrights have written and produced 20+ evenings of innovative new writing,  either topical micro-plays on the pressing issues of the day (e.g. climate change, criminal justice, Brexit, fake news, consumerism, voting apathy and plenty more – see below), or ‘Doubled Up’ where two of our writers share a slot to present their longer stage-plays in development.  Our evenings regularly include a panel discussion with regional experts on our chosen theme, and the shows are quickly booked up by our enthusiastic audience who continue the debate with us in the cafe bar afterwards and online.
